Dance Physiotherapy is a type of treatment that meets the unique needs of dancers, focusing on injury rehabilitation and prevention to achieve optimal performance. If you’re a dancer, we’ll work to restore your strength and balance so you can get back out to do what you love.

Our dance physios in Melbourne have extensive training in treating dance-specific injuries. First, we assess your dance technique, muscle function and biomechanics to identify any imbalances contributing to your pain or injury. We then treat the underlying cause of your problem with manual therapy, prescribed exercise programs, and injury prevention strategies.

Whether you’re an amateur ballet dancer or a professional performer, injuries are all too commonplace. Many of our patients come to us with ankle, foot, knee, hip and back pain, typically caused by overuse, poor body mechanics or tightness. Our dance physiotherapists develop bespoke treatment programs to restore full range of motion, reduce pain and strengthen the muscles that help support your joints.

Poor technique and muscle imbalances are often culprits behind common dance injuries. Examples include a lack of hip rotation in a turnout or weak glutes that lead to lower back pain. Our dance physiotherapists in Melbourne will analyse your technique, posture and movement patterns to identify the root of your injury or pain. We’ll then help you correct your technique to help prevent a recurrence and improve your resilience.

Solidus’ dance physio uses a multi-disciplinary approach to tackle your injury. We’ll use manual therapy to treat the painful area while explaining the science behind what we do and why. Our dance physiotherapists’ techniques include remedial massage, stretching, joint mobilisation, muscle energy techniques, and neuromuscular re-education. We’ll also provide you with a strength program to help build stability and muscle strength to prevent future injury.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do dancers need physical therapy?

Dancers generally perform sudden movements and hold strenuous poses, placing enormous stress on their feet, ankles and hips. Physical therapy increases body strength, flexibility, coordination and balance, making you a better dancer whilst making you injury resilient.

Dance therapy uses a unique blend of stretching, strengthening, and balancing exercises to increase body strength, improve stability, and restore full range of motion. This means dancers can hit the floor with a fully functional body that is more injury-resist.

As dance physiotherapy focuses on movement patterns associated with dancing, we provide a tailored exercise program specifically for your needs.

Ankle sprains are one of the most common acute injuries for dancers. This is due to the excessive strain placed on the ankle’s ligaments, which can be overstretched and torn. Hip impingement, which is often caused by muscle strains, snapping hip syndrome and a labral tear, is another familiar injury dancers have to endure.

According to a survey made by The Safe Dance Report IV, 97% of Australian dancers suffered from at least one significant injury throughout their careers. Conversely, 73% of respondents said they suffered a dance-related injury last year. Because of this, dance physiotherapy is becoming increasingly popular.

In your first consultation, our dance physiotherapists will discuss your dancing history, along with the severity of your injuries. Our dance physios will then conduct a thorough physical assessment, where we observe your technique and determine the underlying root of your pain. We’ll then work with you to create an individualised exercise program to facilitate recovery.
